But tucked away out of sight in his backyard are the signs of his preparations for doomsday, a catastrophic societal collapse that Erwin, 45, now believes is likely within his lifetime.

“I’ve got, under an awning, stacks of firewood, rain catching in barrels, I’ve got a shed with barbed concertina wire, like the military uses,” he told AFP.

He and his wife also have also stockpiled thousands of rounds of ammunition and enough food for about six months.

“Several years ago I worked on paying off the house, replacing all the windows, and just very recently, I’m proud to say, we’ve replaced all our exterior doors with more energy-efficient ones, with as much built-in security features as I could get,” he told AFP.

“Plus I’m going to be adding some more structural improvements to the door frames to make it hopefully virtually impossible to take a battering ram to them.”

Erwin and others like him in the United States and elsewhere see political upheaval and natural disasters as clear signs that civilization is doomed.

“We’re hitting on all cylinders as far as symptoms that have led other great powers to decline or collapse: resource depletion, damage to the environment, climate change, those are the same things that affected other great societies,” he said.

For Erwin, the decline is irreversible and the best approach is to prepare for the inevitable.

His pessimism is shared by a wide range of people, from left-wing environmentalists who believe climate change and capitalist greed will doom human society to Christian fundamentalists who think sin will do the same.

They label themselves “preppers,” “doomers,” and “survivalists,” and take a variety of different approaches to the same question: How best to prepare for the coming apocalypse?

Jim Rawles, who Erwin describes as “the patron saint of survivalism,” prefers an isolationist, Christian-influenced approach.

He homeschooled his children, declines to say where he lives, and advises readers of his website survivalblog.com to “relocate to a safe area and live there year-round.”

“When planning your retreat house, think: medieval castle,” he adds, extolling the benefits of using sandbags to protect any new home.

Rawles, like many on the most conservative end of the survivalist spectrum, is also anti-tax, pro-gun rights, and suspicious of anything that smacks of socialism.

But the survivalist movement also includes left-wing community activists, who are devoted to living off the land and have never fired a weapon, and people like Chris Martenson, who quit a job with a six-figure salary that he felt was “an unnecessary diversion from the real tasks at hand.”

He began growing his own food and developed a “Crash Course” that urges people to better prepare for societal instability. He also took over management of his investments and boasts of a 166 percent return on his portfolio.

For Martenson, the wake-up call was the September 11, 2001 attacks, when he felt gripped by uncertainty and totally unprepared.

Erwin had always felt that society would eventually disintegrate, but he and many other US survivalists say the dysfunctional response to the 2005 Hurricane Katrina was what spurred them to action.

“I thought, okay, things are not going to get better… maybe this society, our civilization, the American empire, will collapse during my lifetime,” Erwin said.

For John Milandred, no single event pushed him to leave his suburban home and set up a farm in Oklahoma.

“We just got fed up of working all the time to pay bills and not accomplishing anything,” he said.

A member of the American Preppers Network, Milandred said he and his wife aspired to “grow our own foods and be self sufficient… to live like the pioneers, like our great-grandparents.”

It is unclear how many people subscribe to the lifestyle, but there are hundreds of websites devoted to the movement, and Erwin’s surburban-self-reliance.com attracts visitors from around the world.

The global financial crisis has increased interest in survivalism “bigtime,” Erwin said, but he feels sorry for latecomers to the movement.

“We’ll help them if we can,” he said. “But a lot of people are climbing on board at the last minute and its going to be hard for them.”

Republican Party leader Michael Steele faced heavy criticism and calls for his resignation on Friday after blaming President Barack Obama for the Afghanistan war and suggesting it could not be won.

At a Republican fundraiser in Connecticut on Thursday, Steele was videotaped while criticizing Obama’s decision to bolster the Afghanistan war effort. The comments contradicted the stance of the party, which has consistently pushed for more troops and funding in Afghanistan.

“This was a war of Obama’s choosing,” said Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee. “This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in.”

Steele also called the recent resignation of Afghan war commander General Stanley McChrystal “comical” and made fun of Obama for deciding to increase the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

“If he’s such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that’s the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan?” Steele asked the crowd in a video promptly distributed by Democrats and posted on YouTube.

“Because everyone who has tried, over a thousand years of history, has failed,” he said.

The United States invaded Afghanistan under Republican President George W. Bush in retaliation for the September 11, 2001, attacks by al Qaeda, whose leaders had taken refuge there.

The comments sparked a wave of criticism from Democrats and calls for Steele’s resignation, led by prominent Republican conservative columnist Bill Kristol.

“Needless to say, the war in Afghanistan was not ‘a war of Obama’s choosing,’” Kristol said in a blog on the Weekly Standard magazine site. “It has been prosecuted by the United States under Presidents Bush and Obama. Republicans have consistently supported the effort.

“There are, of course, those who think we should pull out of Afghanistan and they’re certainly entitled to make their case. But one of them shouldn’t be the chairman of the Republican Party.”

Steele issued a statement trying to extricate himself from the controversy, saying Obama’s shift in the U.S. military focus from Iraq to Afghanistan means “this is his strategy.”

“As we have learned throughout history, winning a war in Afghanistan is a difficult task. We must also remember that after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, it is also a necessary one,” Steele said. “The stakes are too high for us to accept anything but success in Afghanistan.”

Democrats pounced on the comments by Steele, who is trying to help lead Republicans to major gains in November’s congressional elections.

“It’s simply unconscionable that Michael Steele would undermine the morale of our troops when what they need is our support and encouragement,” said Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse.

Steele has been embroiled in a series of controversies since taking over the party last year, including questions about lavish party spending and comments on topics ranging from race to abortion to conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh.

Bedrock conservatism is enjoying a surge with the rise of the Tea Party movement, which advocates small government, individual rights and has made a strong showing in Utah. The debate may become only hotter after a Monday U.S. Supreme Court ruling extended gun rights to all cities and states.

Spurred by fears that U.S. President Barack Obama will add gun control to his already crowded domestic agenda, denizens of the once-wild West and other Americans are snapping up firearm permits. Some 90 million people in the United States have an estimated 200 million guns.

Utah makes it easy, and thousands have enrolled in classes promoting its concealed weapons license to people from other states, many of whom have never been to Utah and never intend to go there.

Salmon, Idaho resident Bruce Smith just took an Idaho-based Utah permit course that would let him carry in Idaho, Utah and 31 other states. Course provider Ericsson Investigations on its Web site promises to teach laws, gun safety and “the combat ‘mind set’”.

“I’d hate to be without backup,” Smith said. The course did not include shooting a gun but did show how to load one.

A five-year permit good in 33 states has flooded Utah with applications, with the number rising to 74,000 last year. The fee is $65.25. Applicants must also clear a background check, be 21, and take a course.

Today, more out-of-state residents have Utah licenses than state residents, and out-of-state instructors outnumber those from Utah.

Utah’s program alarms gun control groups like the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

“It’s a state where they don’t seem to care about the consequences that may arise from some of the permits they’re issuing,” said spokesman Peter Hamm.

OUT OF STATE CLASSES

Texas and other gun-friendly states require gun permit classes to be based in their state, which Utah does not. Utah’s licenses are valid in more states than most, too. Idaho permits are valid in only four other states — one eighth the number with which Utah has agreements.

Not all states are happy with Utah’s plan. Western neighbors New Mexico and Nevada in recent months have revoked recognition of Utah’s licenses because it doesn’t oblige applicants to train with a handgun or even fire one.

With the state poised to become the de facto national supplier of such permits, officials with the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification say they are overwhelmed.

“The only people making money off it are the instructors,” said Lt. Doug Anderson, manager of the concealed firearms program.

More Americans than ever believe they need to carry a concealed weapon, and the sentiment is widespread in Western states, where historic settlement saw justice dispensed at the end of a gun barrel.

The pattern strengthened when Obama was elected president. Pro-gun activists emphasized that Obama was from Illinois, one of two states that forbid carrying concealed weapons.

“With the change in administration from Bush to Obama, people became concerned there would be additional gun-control legislation,” said Idaho-based firearms instructor John Kie. “That hasn’t played out but the fear is there.”

Concealed-carry permits in states like Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Texas are jumping.

“Obama and all of them are just trying to take away our rights,” said Salmon Mayor John Miller, a self-described gun activist. “I believe in guns. Idaho, Montana, all the Wild West states, we’re not giving up our guns.”

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said Thursday she’s angry over comments by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that the Obama administration will sue the state over its new immigration law.


In a June 8 media interview in Ecuador that began circulating Thursday in the U.S., Clinton said President Barack Obama thinks the federal government should determine immigration policy and that the Justice Department “will be bringing a lawsuit against the act.”

Justice spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler on Thursday declined to say whether the department would sue and that “the department continues to review the law.”

The department has been looking at the law for weeks for possible civil rights violations, with an eye toward a possible court challenge.

It’s unclear why Clinton made the comment since it’s not her area. She couldn’t be reached Thursday for comment.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Obama and Clinton have both made it clear that the administration opposes the law.

“I will defer to the Justice Department on the legal steps that are available and where they stand on the review of the law,” Crowley said. “The secretary believes that comprehensive immigration reform is a better course of action.”

Brewer, a Republican, said in a statement that “this is no way to treat the people of Arizona.”

“To learn of this lawsuit through an Ecuadorean interview with the secretary of state is just outrageous,” she said. “If our own government intends to sue our state to prevent illegal immigration enforcement, the least it can do is inform us before it informs the citizens of another nation.”

Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman said the governor was “outraged” and that Clinton’s comments make it appear that the Justice Department has decided to file suit.

“But she’s confident that in the end, the state of Arizona, the citizens, will prevail,” he said.

On April 23, Brewer signed what is considered the toughest legislation in the nation targeting illegal immigrants. It is set to go into effect July 29 pending multiple legal challenges and the Justice Department’s review.

The law requires police investigating another incident or crime to ask people about their immigration status if there’s a “reasonable suspicion” they’re in the country illegally. It also makes being in Arizona illegally a misdemeanor, and it prohibits seeking day-labor work along the state’s streets.

The law’s stated intention is to drive illegal immigrants out of Arizona and discourage them from coming in the first place. It has outraged civil rights groups, drawn criticism from Obama and led to marches and protests organized by people on both sides of the issue.


The law’s backers say Congress isn’t doing anything meaningful about illegal immigration, so it’s the state’s duty to address the issue. Critics say it will lead to racial profiling and discrimination against Hispanics, and damage ties between police and minority communities.

Brewer met with Obama in the Oval Office about the law on June 3, telling him: “We want our border secured.” Obama reiterated his objections to the law. Neither side appeared to give ground although both talked about seeking a bipartisan solution.

Other Arizona politicians, political candidates and activist groups were quick to weigh in on Clinton’s remarks. U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Hayworth, who is challenging Sen. John McCain, called them appalling; attorney general candidates Tom Horne and Andrew Thomas also denounced them.
