Does Earthquake in Haiti signal the End of Times

Sao Paulo/Port-au-Prince – Haiti collapsed into chaos at 4:53 pm (2153 GMT) Tuesday. The worst Haitian earthquake in at least a century devastated Port-au-Prince, the capital of the empoverished Caribbean country. Hundreds, and perhaps even thousands, are believed to have died. More than 20 strong aftershocks were felt in the city of 1.9-million people.

Blood-stained residents wandered in panic and shock through the streets of Port-au-Prince as the earth shook time and again.

“This is the end of the world,” said a young woman who saw out the quake on a hill.

Another eyewitness estimated that 40 per cent of the homes and buildings in Port-au-Prince were destroyed or damaged.

“It’s an apocalypse … People are in the streets, sitting around and waiting. Many are aggressive. There are many dead. The few hospitals still functioning have no medicine,” she said.

The Haitian telephone network broke down. For hours there was almost no contact with the Caribbean country. Information became available very slowly.

Many Haitians eventually managed to ask for help through the internet, sending photos, on-the-scene videos and comments via Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites.

When darkness fell over Port-au-Prince, people stayed outside and slept under the stars, wary of the danger from shaky buildings.

As the earth shook, taller buildings collapsed and buried people under them. The ground swallowed up cars. Streets buckled. Power and telephone lines were pulled loose.

In the dark night, people dug through debris with bare hands to rescue those who were trapped, following the cries for help. Television footage showed one man screaming in pain as others tried to free his left leg from the debris. The only light came from houses caught on fire.

“A nightmare,” one Haitian said via Skype.

Some people received emergency treatment on the dusty streets.

The Red Cross estimated that 3 million people – about one-third of Haiti’s population – were affected by the quake.

The dazzling white presidential palace collapsed, as did the Roman Catholic cathedral. The quake took down several high-rise buildings used by the United Nations, which has a stabilization mission of 9,000 troops in Haiti since 2004. UN peacekeepers from Jordan, China and Brazil died in the temblor.

Haitian President Rene Preval said that thousands may have died. The rush was on to rescue as many as possible within the first 48 hours, as the international community sent help.

“Walls everywhere have collapsed. I ran for my life. People were screaming, ‘Jesus, Jesus!’ It was completely unreal, totally upside down. I ran out of my hotel room, and the wall collapsed immediately next to me,” photographer Ivanoh Demers told Canadian online magazine cyberpresse.ca.

Around 200 people went missing amid the rubble of the popular luxury tourist spot, Hotel Montana.

The Haitian Ambassador in the United States, Raymond Joseph, spoke of a disaster, but noted that the troubled Caribbean country is used to crises.

“The only thing I can say is that the Haitian people are a really courageous people, and in the past, when we have been hit hard, we come back fighting,” Joseph said in a telephone interview with the Boston Globe. “With the help of everyone, we’ll live through this.”

A hospital-ship was urgently needed.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, buffeted by political strife and fierce weather. In the summer of 2008, four back-to-back hurricanes and tropical storms battered the country. Even in normal circumstances, there is little infrastructure.

New York’s police commissioner Raymond Kelly, who visited Haiti recently to evaluate emergency infrastructure, told US television there was “no fire department, no rescue teams” in operation even before the quake.

The United Nations, European Union, United States, Brazil, Taiwan and other countries were organizing rescue teams, equipment and food for the shaken country amid severe transport difficulties. One aid worker told CNN that motorbikes were the only motorized transport that could get through.

Port-au-Prince airport was closed. An American Airlines airplane was the last to take off, shortly after the quake. When it arrived in Miami, Haitians on board were not rejoicing over the safe flight out of chaos, but rather worrying about the uncertain fate of their families and friends back in Haiti.

They feared the worst.

North Pole summers will be ice free in 10 years

LONDON – A team of British explorers says that within a decade the North Pole will be virtually ice-free during the summer.

The Catlin Arctic Survey trekked an average of about 11 kilometers (six miles) per day and swam in freezing water to take measurements of the ice and snow.

Measurements during the three month research project showed that most of the ice is first year ice that measures about 1.8 meters (six feet) thick. Peter Wadhams with the University of Cambridge said Wednesday the ice is too thin to survive next summer’s ice melt.

The results come ahead of the UN climate Summit in Copenhagen this December.

Question: “What signs indicate that the end times are approaching?”

Answer: Matthew 24:5-8 gives us some important clues so we can discern the approach of the end times, “For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” An increase in false messiahs, an increase in warfare, and increases in famines, plagues, and natural disasters—these are signs of the end times. In this passage, though, we are given a warning: we are not to be deceived, because these events are only the beginning of birth pains; the end is still to come.

Some interpreters point to every earthquake, every political upheaval, and every attack on Israel as a sure sign that the end times are rapidly approaching. While the events may signal the approach of the last days, they are not necessarily indicators that the end times have arrived. The apostle Paul warned that the last days would bring a marked increase in false teaching. “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons” (1 Timothy 4:1). The last days are described as “perilous times” because of the increasingly evil character of man and people who actively “resist the truth” (2 Timothy 3:1-9; see also 2 Thessalonians 2:3).

Other possible signs would include a rebuilding of a Jewish temple in Jerusalem, increased hostility towards Israel, and advances toward a one-world government. The most prominent sign of the end times, however, is the nation of Israel. In 1948, Israel was recognized as a sovereign state, essentially for the first time since A.D. 70. God promised Abraham that his posterity would have Canaan as “an everlasting possession” (Genesis 17:8), and Ezekiel prophesied a physical and spiritual resuscitation of Israel (Ezekiel chapter 37). Having Israel as a nation in its own land is important in light of end times prophecy because of Israel’s prominence in eschatology (Daniel 10:14; 11:41; Revelation 11:8).

With these signs in mind, we can be wise and discerning in regard to the expectation of the end times. We should not, however, interpret any of these singular events as a clear indication of the soon arrival of the end times. God has given us enough information that we can be prepared, and that is what we are called to be.

Feds Put Focus on Swine Flu Vaccines

Federal authorities plan to launch a massive campaign in the coming weeks to convince Americans to get the swine flu vaccine and to erase any public skepticism about the flu’s danger and the safety of immunizations.

Even as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has manufacturers working overtime to produce a vaccine for the swine flu by mid-October, government officials are concerned that demand for immunization will not be high. In particular, parents participating in focus groups this summer expressed concern that ramping up vaccine production would make it less safe than the seasonal flu vaccine.

Only about 1 in 3 Americans gets the seasonal flu shot, but some of the groups with the lowest rates of immunization have the highest risk of becoming infected with the swine flu. Less than 25 percent of children under age 2 get the seasonal flu vaccine, for example, and rates are even lower for school-aged children

“Many parents (in focus groups) expressed a lot of concerns about 2009 H1N1 vaccine. Those concerns were centered around the fact that it was new and it was being developed quickly,” said Kris Sheedy, a communications director with the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, during a meeting with reporters at the CDC on Tuesday. “There were comments such as ‘this is new and I don’t want my child to be a guinea pig.’ ”

She added that people in focus groups mostly viewed the swine flu as a “mild disease,” which might make them reluctant to be vaccinated.
Cause of concern

Since it first emerged last spring, the swine flu, a form of influenza Type A, subtype H1N1, has been no more dangerous than seasonal influenza. But most people have no natural immunity to the virus and federal public health officials worry about the consequences if it is allowed to spread unchecked.

On Monday, federal officials estimated that the swine flu could infect 60 million to 120 million people in the United States this fall and winter and result in up to 1.8 million people being hospitalized and as many as 90,000 dying.

In their campaign to raise awareness, public health officials on the local and national levels will target high-risk populations – including children, pregnant women, and adults with underlying health problems. Regional health departments will set up clinics at schools and other public places to distribute the vaccine.

The federal government will spend about $16 million on outreach to convince people of the need to get the swine flu vaccine.

CDC officials are expecting about 45 million doses of vaccine to be available by mid-October, with another 20 million doses delivered every week through the rest of the year. That’s not nearly enough to cover the entire U.S. population, but officials said that won’t be necessary – the real battle likely will be convincing people in the high-risk groups to get the vaccine.
Safety assurances

The swine flu vaccine should be just as safe as the seasonal flu shot, CDC officials said. The new vaccine is being manufactured using the same process as the seasonal vaccine, but with a different strain of influenza – which is what happens every year when a new vaccine is made in accordance with whatever strain is expected to be circulating in the coming flu season.

So far, clinical trials have shown the swine flu vaccine to be safe, but the CDC will be monitoring immunizations throughout the season. If there are side effects, CDC officials said, they’ll likely be rare and won’t show up until hundreds of thousands of people have been vaccinated. If serious side effects appear during clinical trials the vaccine program will be halted immediately.

“We certainly feel that from everything we’ve seen, the risks associated with the illness are much higher than the risk associated with the vaccine,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “If there are rare, severe adverse events, it will only be after wide-scale use that we’ll see them.”

Why is National Guard recruiting for ‘internment’ cops? Ad campaign seeks workers at ‘civilian resettlement facility’ AKA Concentration Camp Guards

An ad campaign featured on a U.S. Army website seeking those who would be interested in being an “Internment/Resettlement” specialist is raising alarms across the country, generating concerns that there is some truth in those theories about domestic detention camps, a roundup of dissidents and a crackdown on “threatening” conservatives.

The ads, at the GoArmy.com website as well as others including Monster.com, cite the need for:

“Internment/Resettlement (I/R) Specialists in the Army are primarily responsible for day-to-day operations in a military confinement/correctional facility or detention/internment facility. I/R Specialists provide rehabilitative, health, welfare, and security to U.S. military prisoners within a confinement or correctional facility; conduct inspections; prepare written reports; and coordinate activities of prisoners/internees and staff personnel.

The campaign follows by only weeks a report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security warning about “right-wing extremists” who could pose a danger to the country – including those who support third-party political candidates, oppose abortion and would prefer to have the U.S. immigration laws already on the books enforced.

Harvest Crusade

The “extremism” report coincided with a report out of California that the Department of Defense was describing protesters as “low-level terrorists.”

The new ad says successful candidates will “provide external security to … detention/internment facilities” and “provide counseling and guidance to individual prisoners within a rehabilitative program.”

Officials at the state and federal National Guard levels told WND they were unaware of the program, although one officer speculated it could be intended for soldiers trained in the U.S. and dispatched overseas to “detention facilities.” From the national level, WND was told, officials were unaware of any such “internment facilities” at which there could be jobs to be available.
Army job ad for ‘internment’ specialist

At a NationalGuard.com website, a front page video describes the position thoroughly.

But one of the critics was a YouTube contributor who identifies himself as jafount and titled his video, “Want a job putting people into camps?”

Alarmed by the ads, he said it, the idea “just absolutely blew my mind.”

Citing a promise that successful applicants would be trained in “search and restrain procedures,” he said, “That’s code for violating the 14th Amendment.”

Likewise, he said, “use of firearms” is “code for depriving somebody of their life.’

“This is the real deal, I think,” he said, citing, among others, the NationalGuard.com link.

“I saw something that didn’t sit right with me. I posted it so other people can investigate,” he said.

A commenter on the YouTube site pooh-poohed the whole suggestion.

“You have … put out a relatively benign fact, twisted it into something sinister, and then did a tinfoil-hat connection to give a false impression,” the forum participant wrote.

The ads list as “advanced responsibilities” issues such as supervision and administration, responsibility for the “prisoner/internee” population, “custody/control for the operation of an Enemy Prisoner of War/Civilian Internee (EPW/CI) camp,” and work on “custody/control for the operation of detention facility or the operation of a displaced civilian (CD) resettlement facility.”

An editorial at CanadaFreePress.com raised some overall concerns:

Let’s look at some of the evidence we have of the U.S. government’s intentions to establish the infrastructure that could be used to house large numbers of political dissidents, so-called terrorists and other individuals the U.S. government wants locked up.

HR 645 the National Emergency Centers Establishment Act is a proposed bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would authorize FEMA to build no less than six National Emergency Centers throughout the U.S. on closed or open military facilities. These facilities are to be designed to house large numbers of people. Why would emergency centers need to be built on closed or open military facilities unless there was a need to keep people from coming in and out of them?

KBR was granted a government contract a few years ago to build facilities to house illegal immigrants. Now with illegal immigration becoming less of a problem with the U.S. economy in the toilet, these facilities can now be used for other purposes.

“This is just another step in the U.S. government’s long term plan to build the infrastructure that could be used to contain wide spread popular revolt. Combine this with the swine flu fear mongering and the potential for a mass swine flu vaccination operation and it is easy to see what might happen. Refuse to take their poisonous vaccine and you might risk being locked up as being a hazard to public safety. With the economy in the toilet and more and more people not trusting either political party or the corporate media, the ‘powers that be’ realize that they need to continue building their martial law apparatus. These Army National Guard job listings are just another piece to that puzzle proving what we already know is being built,” the editorial claimed.

At the Examiner, a commentator wrote, “Correctional/internment facilities? I have to admit that the U.S. government is good at one thing: creating fluffy names for evil acts. During WW2, of course, the U.S. didn’t have concentration camps, we had ‘relocation centers’ for hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese citizens.”

The jobs also were listed at Jobsearch.money.cnn.com, employmentguide.com and freedomsphoenix.com.

WND reported when the DoD eventually withdrew a training manual question that linked protesters across the United States to terrorism.

That followed by only weeks a Department of Homeland Security report that described as “right-wing extremists” those who oppose abortion and support secure national borders.

Richard Thompson, president of the Thomas More Law Center, has told WND that as part of his organization’s research for its lawsuit over the DHS “extremism” report, it has discovered additional information that it is withholding now but will include in a pending amended complaint.

Thompson said one of the things that sparked the organization’s curiosity was a reference by DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in the original report to not only government resources but also non-governmental resources.

Thompson said the information he has “creates even more concern that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is unconstitutionally targeting Americans merely because of their conservative beliefs.”

The earlier DHS report was “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.” WND has posted the report online for readers to see.

The report linked returning veterans with the possibility of terrorism, and when it was released it created such a furor for Napolitano she has given several explanations for it, including that she would have reworded the report and that it was issued by a rogue employee.

She later apologized to veterans for having linked them to terror.

But Thompson noted that the report also targeted as “potential terrorists” Americans who:

* Oppose abortion

* Oppose same-sex marriage

* Oppose restrictions on firearms

* Oppose lax immigration laws

* Oppose the policies of President Obama regarding immigration, citizenship, and the expansion of social programs

* Oppose continuation of free trade agreements

* Are suspect of foreign regimes

* Fear Communist regimes

* Oppose a “one world” government

* Bemoan the decline of U.S. stature in the world

* Are upset with loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs to China and India, and more

Thompson told WND no apology has been offered to the members of any of those classes of citizens.

Thompson said the original “extremism” report was “the tip of the iceberg. … Conservative Americans should be very outraged.”

The Thomas More Law Center filed its lawsuit against Napolitano and the DHS on behalf of nationally syndicated conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage, Gregg Cunningham of the pro-life organization Center for Bio-Ethical Reform Inc. and Iraqi War Marine veteran Kevin Murray.

It alleges the federal agency violated the First and Fifth Amendment constitutional rights of the three plaintiffs by targeting them for disfavored treatment and chilling their free speech, expressive association, and equal protection rights. The lawsuit further claims that DHS encouraged law enforcement officers throughout the nation to target and report citizens to federal officials as suspicious rightwing extremists and potential terrorists because of their political beliefs.

In Texas the Water supply is almost gone another End Sign

DALLAS – Off-duty police officers are patrolling streets, looking for people illegally watering their lawns and gardens. Residents are encouraged to stealthily rat out water scofflaws on a 24-hour hot line. One Texas lake has dipped so low that stolen cars dumped years ago are peeking up through the waterline.

The nation’s most drought-stricken state is deep-frying under relentless 100-degree days and waterways are drying up, especially in the hardest-hit area covering about 350 miles across south-central Texas. That’s making folks worried about the water supply – and how long it might last.
“The water table’s fallin’ and fallin’ and fallin,’ like a whole lot of other people around here,” said Wendell McLeod, general manager of Liberty Hill Water Supply Corp. and a 60-year resident of the town northwest of Austin. “This is the worst I can recall seeing it. I tell you, it’s just pretty bleak.”
There are 230 Texas public water systems under mandatory water restrictions, including those in and near San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin. Another 60 or so have asked for voluntary cutbacks. Water levels are down significantly in lakes, rivers and wells around Texas.
Liberty Hill’s Web site urges its 1,400 or so residents in all-red letters to stop using unnecessary water with this plea: “If we follow these strict guidelines, we may have drinking water.” The town’s shortage eased some with the arrival this week of 35,000 gallons a day from a nearby water system, but residents are still worried.
According to drought statistics released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 77 of Texas’ 254 counties are in extreme or exceptional drought, the most severe categories. No other state in the continental U.S. has even one area in those categories. John Nielsen-Gammon, the Texas state climatologist at Texas A&M University, said he expects harsh drought conditions to last at least another month.
In the bone-dry San Antonio-Austin area, the conditions that started in 2007 are being compared to the devastating drought of the 1950s. There have been 36 days of 100 degrees or more this year in an area where it’s usually closer to 12.
Among the most obvious problems are the lack of water in Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan near Austin, two massive reservoirs along the Colorado River that provide drinking water for more than 1 million people and also are popular boating and swimming spots. Streams and tributaries that feed the lakes have “all but dried up,” according to the Lower Colorado River Authority.
Lake Travis is more empty than full, down 54 percent. All but one of the 12 boating ramps are closed because they no longer reach the water, and the last may go soon. The receding waters have even revealed old stolen cars shoved into the lake years ago, authorities said.
There’s no threat to the area’s drinking water supply, said Bob Rose, a meteorologist with the river authority. But there are increased boating hazards from the “sometimes islands” that pop up when the water’s low, increased risk of wildfires, and more interactions between humans and wildlife.
“We’re seeing deer and armadillo and other animals in places we don’t typically see them,” he said. “They’re starving for water and food.”
At the Oasis, a popular restaurant with a deck overlooking Lake Travis, the islands are even starting to grow heavy vegetation.
“You can see all the white on the rocks where the waterline used to be,” said Becca Torbert, a server at the restaurant who says the boat traffic is down, but the water’s down even more.
San Antonio, which relies on the Edwards Aquifer for its water, is enduring its driest 23-month period since weather data was recorded starting in 1885, according to the National Weather Service. The aquifer’s been hovering just above 640 feet deep, and if it dips below that the city will issue its harshest watering restrictions yet.
The city’s not just sitting around, though. A total of 30 off-duty officers and other employees are working overtime to patrol the city looking for people illegally watering. Since April, about 1,500 people have been cited and ordered to pay fines ranging from $50 to over $1,000. Residents also are encouraged to rat out water scofflaws on the 24-hour Water Waste Hot Line.
“We don’t go out in a car with sirens blazing or anything like that, but we do take the report and send out a letter saying ‘You’ve been reported for not following water rules,’” said Anne Hayden, spokeswoman for the San Antonio Water System.
There have been smatterings of light rain in the area this week, but not enough to make much difference. But hopefully, the end is in sight. Victor Murphy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said an El Nino system is developing in the Pacific Ocean. That phenomenon is usually followed by increased rainfall in Texas in the fall.
McLeod, from Liberty City, hopes his little town can hang on till then.
“I don’t know how we can,” he said. “I try not to look too far ahead.”

The reason He seems to be silent, is because He is patiently waiting, not willing that any perish, but that all come to repentance.
